Latinos are the youngest and fastest growing ethnic group
in the United States. • In Texas Hispanics account for 42 percent of the college-age population. • Between 2000 and 2005, the number of Hispanics enrolled in undergraduate education increased about 30%. • About half of all Hispanic college students (48%) are of Mexican descent. • The majority of Hispanic undergraduates are enrolled in two-year institutions (52%). • Hispanic women enrolled in college have increased. In 2004, Hispanic women represented almost 60% of all Hispanics in higher education. • The vast majority of Latinos enrolled in undergraduate education are U.S. citizens. • Only 29% of Latinos in college had parents who had earned a bachelor’s degree or higher, compared to 41% of all undergraduates. • In 2005, the college enrollment rate (percentage of those completing high school and enrolled in college the fall immediately following graduation) for Hispanics was 54%, whereas the rate for Caucasian students was 73%. • About 50% of all Hispanics enrolled in higher education were in two states in 2005: California and Texas. • Almost 75% of Latinos in higher education are concentrated in five states: California, Texas, New York, Florida, and Illinois. |
